Grand Guignol is a deeply atmospheric, GMless tabletop roleplaying game that invites players into the fog-drenched streets and crooked alleys of Victorian London, seen through a queer Gothic lens. Inspired by reimagined Gothic literature, the game explores intimacy and terror, beauty and brutality, and the fragile humanity that persists in the margins of a ruthless empire. Set during the height of the Industrial Revolution, Grand Guignol presents a city overflowing with displaced workers, grinding machinery, and predatory elites. Factories tame nature and time, while monsters—both literal and metaphorical—stalk the powerless. Amid whispers at the witching hour and unseen eyes watching from the dark, players portray citizens who exist outside society’s narrow expectations: monsters, queers, and outsiders who cling to one another for survival, love, and meaning. Using the Belonging Outside Belonging system, Grand Guignol requires no dice, no masters, and no traditional Game Master. Instead, players share narrative authority, shaping the world together through evocative playbooks such as the Beast, the Gate, the Scholar, and the Ward. Each character embodies tension between control and surrender, power and vulnerability, desire and fear. The game introduces Occasions—structured narrative frames such as Seances, Investigations, Rendezvous, and supernatural Visitations—that echo iconic Gothic scenes while encouraging critical engagement with the genre’s themes. As players sculpt their own version of London, they confront capitalism, religion, monstrosity, and empire, writing secret histories in places the gaslights cannot reach. Grand Guignol is both an indulgence in Gothic horror and a reclamation of it, offering a haunting, intimate roleplaying experience.
